What's Wrong With Addiction?

Author: Helen Kean

"Keane's work is thoughtful and thought provoking and incorporates elements of medical history and philosophy."—Psychiatric Services

"A theoretically engaging exploration of the arbitrariness of the field of addiction studies."
—Robert Granfield, co-author of Coming Clean

We assume that there is something wrong with addiction. But how exactly is it bad to be an addict? What's Wrong with Addiction? explores the ways in which our views of addiction categorize certain ways of being as unnatural, diseased, and self-destructive, often working to reinforce existing social hierarchies. Under the rubric of addiction, pleasure and desire are demonized, while the addict is viewed as damaged and in need of physical and moral rectificaiton.

Keane examines the ambiguities in medical science's quest to construct addiction in chemical and biological terms, revealing the strains in the oppositions between disease and health, and addiction and normality. She demonstrates how these strains have become more insistent as the net of addiction has spread wider, moving beyond chemical substances to other problems of consumption and conduct such as compulsive eating and sex addiction. The book also critically examines the ideals of health, freedom, and happiness found in popular self-help literature, suggesting that it is the practices of self-surveillance and self-interrogation promoted in recovery guides which actually produce the inner self as an object of concern.

The book helps families and patients deal with the terrible reality of this chronic, debilitating disease through the personal stories of others. These deeply moving case studies and anecdotes give hope, dignity, and ideas for solving even the most difficult problems such as sexuality, violence, abuse, family conflict, and death. The Loss of Self is the best book available not only for those suffering from the disease, but for family members wanting to understand how to help a relative and to meet their own needs over the long years of caring.

Irving S. Wright

[T]he most useful source of practical guidelines for the general care of patients with Alzheimer's disease yet to be published.

Publishers Weekly

Despite greater public awareness and continued research, no cure for Alzeheimer's Disease has yet been found. However, Eisdorfer, president/chief executive officer of Montefiore Medical Center and professor of psychiatry and neurosciences at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Cohen, a gerontologist also affiliated with Montefiore and Einstein College, believe that these accounts of how families have coped with the debilitating disease may help other afflicted families to better manage the lives of the patient and themselves. The authors advise readers on developing and implementing a comprehensive, affordable life care plan to handle both practical and emotional matters. They discuss the sensitive relationships between doctor, family and patient, and the need to consider the interests of individual family members. The selection of a nursing home and chapters on dying and the cost of care complete this compassionate and sensible guidebook. (February 24)

Library Journal

The authors offer timely and necessary advice for the families of the more than two million Americans facing various dementias. The book reflects state of the art information as well as the authors' extensive experience in assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for dementia patients and their families. Included is practical information on ``what to do after the diagnosis, where to go for help, . . . how to care for the patient at home, when to institutionalize the patient.'' Drug information provided in the text and an appendix is particularly useful. The authors' insights and their personalized narrative make the book very readable. Although some information is duplicated elsewhere, this is the most succinctly informative and inclusive book on the topic to date. For public libraries and subject collections. Nancy B. Burrell, M.L.S., IBID Inc., Sarasota, Fla.

Dr. Scheuerle walks us through this new field and explains the basics, detailing diseases and disordes that can present in each life stage: in infancy and childhood, in puberty and adolescence, and in adulthood as well as old age. You Arent Alone or Path of Healing

You Aren't Alone: The Voices of Abortion

Author: Peggy Kirk

If you are considering an abortion, this book is for you. Read the stories of women and girls who have had abortions. Read about their lives and decisions. You may find a story similar to your own.

The intention is not to put a guilt trip on you, or hit you over the head with religion, or pass judgment on you. This book was written because of and for women who are in difficult situations.

The women who shared their stories are very brave. As you read about their lives you will laugh, cry, even get angry. Most of all, in reading these stories you may be better able to decide what is right for you. An abortion is a big step with life-long consequences.

In the author's experience as a marriage and family counselor, the loss of a baby in abortion causes post-abortion trauma in nearly every case. Abortion causes a permanent loss. It is because of that loss that serious problems begin to affect the lives of women who have had abortions.

There are alternatives to abortion. Thousands of loving couples who can't give birth themselves are praying daily for a woman to care enough to share her blessing of birth with them.

Others have been where you are at this moment. You are not alone.

Wild Hunger: The Primal Roots of Modern Addiction

Author: Bruce Wilshir

This pioneering work explores why our culture is plagued by addictions--by giving serious attention to our genetic legacy from our hunter-gatherer ancestors.

The Journal of Addiction and Mental Health

Wild Hunger is every bit as literate and spiritually refreshing as Pincola Estes' Women Who Run with the Wolves and Thomas Moore's Care of the Soul, which topped the bestseller lists. Wilshire speaks to Everyman (and woman) about the nature of Nature to satisfy the primal wild hunger, banish addictive behavior, and extend the message that life is at its best without aNew York crutches.

Publishers Weekly

In this thoughtful, earnest examination of the roots of the addictive behaviors plaguing contemporary societies, Wilshire (Role Playing and Identity) makes an impassioned plea for rediscovering our primal need for ecstatic involvement with the world and other human beings. His conviction that addiction stems from ecstasy deprivation and an inability to access the regenerative sources inherent in nature is compelling, and many readers will identify with the feelings of emptiness and loneliness he blames on our dualistic culture, which, he says, fosters fragmented identities and prevents a holistic approach to life. Where primitive cultures had long-established ways of interpreting and integrating their experiences (myth, ritual, symbols), today's workaholic, alcoholic, media-bombarded humans, Wilshire maintains, have degraded substitutes and no rites of passage to help them. And, by violating themselves with addictive substances and beliefs (including the belief in all-powerful science), they further erode their own powers of renewal. In addition to putting a spotlight on addicts' denial of their basic needs, Wilshire attempts to reveal our limited understanding of the rituals we do partake in (for example, the use of drugs in shamanistic practices and the communal aspect of smoking). Although his scholarly tone and repetitive text may be off-putting to some readers, Wilshire's salient subject matter will speak to a wide audience, as will his location of salvation in the form of creative work and meaningful relationships.

Library Journal

Wilshire (philosophy, Rutgers Univ.) argues that addictive behaviors from smoking to overeating to alcoholism result from modern humanity's loss of ecstatic connection with nature and that society can only overcome these difficulties by cultivating nature, religion, and art. This book is not a systematic argument for this position but rather a compendium of autobiographical meditations (some of which do not seem to have any relationship to the rest of the book), literary quotations, and general musings. It does not offer individual treatment suggestions. Recommended only for larger academic libraries serving programs in addiction counseling or environmentalism.--Mary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, WA

Booknews

Wilshire (Philosophy, Rutgers University) traces the variety of addictions in modern affluent society to our genetic legacy from hunting-gathering ancestors and to the unique way people adapt to their environment through science and by creating art and cities. He suggests wilderness exploration in the arts, myths, and old ceremonies as remedies.

Parabola

Startling! Writing with passion and honesty, Wilshire shows that in addiction we participate in degenerative vicious circles that substitute for the regenerative cycles of nature.

The Journal of Addiction and Mental Health

Wild Hunger is every bit as literate and spiritually refreshing as Pincola Estes' Women Who Run with the Wolves and Thomas Moore's Care of the Soul, which topped the bestseller lists. Wilshire speaks to Everyman (and woman) about the nature of Nature to satisfy the primal wild hunger, banish addictive behavior, and extend the message that life is at its best without any crutches.

What People Are Saying

Wilshire gives insight into the...pseudo-ecstasy of addiction...and how a new awakening can come about.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Patricia D. Shearer, M.D., M.S (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This is a handy guidebook written by a practicing pediatric oncologist and pediatric oncology social worker about childhood cancer. Its question and answer format is divided into sections dealing with the basics of the disease, diagnosis, treatment, side effects, treatment facilities, and adaptive issues.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a comprehensive resource for individuals affected by childhood cancer. It is intended to address issues that arise from diagnosis through completion of therapy and long-term follow-up.
Audience: The book is written especially for patients and parents (thus the title), but has wider appeal to providers and individuals interested in learning the practical aspects of pediatric oncology.
Features: The preface contains a strong endorsement by Dr. Gregory Reaman, Chairman of Children's Oncology Group. The authors present concise descriptions of tumor types, treatment modalities (including types of marrow and stem cell transplants), supportive care (such as antibiotics, transfusions, anti-emetics, reproductive issues, and nutrition), palliative care, psychosocial issues, and members of the team. A section on developmental milestones by age is an important addition. An appendix and glossary provide a list of resources and definition of unfamiliar terms, respectively. Comments from parents highlight the topics. "Black box" insertions facilitate grasp of salient points in each section. The omission of references contributes to the succinct answers the authors give to each question.
Assessment: This book is similar in format and content to Steen and Mirro's Childhood Cancer: A Handbook from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (HarperCollins, 2000). Although this not the only book of its kind to address common questions about pediatric cancer, it is effective in conveying useful, up-to-date information to patients, family members, and providers.

Author: Mari Skelly

Fibromyalgia has no known cause or cure and is impossible to detect through blood tests or other diagnostic techniques. Because it's so difficult to pinpoint or alleviate, fibromyalgia tends to cause guilt and shame in those who suffer from it. Barbara Keddy examines the experiences of 20 female sufferers, and also investigates the disease within larger societal contexts of gender, class, and race. By taking an already existing personality theory (the highly sensitive person) developed by Elaine Aron and relating this theory to a specific physical condition, the author emphasizes societal and family pressures on women to overextend themselves to the detriment of their health.

Swimming for Total Fitness: A Progressive Aerobic Program

Author: Jane Katz

Swimming is one of the best, most enjoyable, and most effective forms of exercise available, and this is the classic guide for beginners and expert swimmers alike, completely revised and updated for the '90s.

B & W line drawings throughout.

Library Journal

Katz, an accomplished swimmer and educator, offers this update of her 1981 book of the same title ( LJ 3/15/81). She presents a graduated program to learning the basics of swimming, beginning with lessons for novice, intermediate, and advanced swimmers and progressing to demanding super workouts for the competitive swimmer. Within each level are ten detailed sublevels, plus variations, warm-ups and cool-downs, advice on physical problems, equipment, racing, and fitness. The treatment is comprehensive, clear, and detailed, though it could have benefited from more illustrations or photographs. Katz's book offers better coverage than Marianne Brems's Swim for Fitness (Chronicle, 1979), or Katherine Vaz and Chip Zempel's Swim Swim: A Complete Handbook for Fitness Swimmers ( LJ 5/1/86). Lifting the Veil of Mental Illness or Taking Time for Me

Lifting the Veil of Mental Illness

Author: William R Bento

Mental illnesses are too often seen only in abstract terms. In line with this, mainstream psychology, which seldom acknowledges the psyche or soul, relies increasingly on pharmaceutical treatment. In this unique approach to anthroposophical psychology, or "psychosophy," the author views imbalances of the human soul in an experiential and human way.

Basing his views on the work of Rudolf Steiner, Bento looks not only at the human body, soul and spirit, but also at the way the whole environment of physical phenomena, life forces and spirit beings affects individuals. Going well beyond our immediate surroundings, the author considers the cosmic effects of sun, planets and stars, offering a holistic view of the human soul.

About the author:
William R. Bento has worked within the fields of human development for over thirty years. He is a recognized pioneer and published author in Psychosophy (soul wisdom) and Astrosophy (star wisdom) and travels extensively as a speaker, teacher and consultant. He lives in Palo Alto, California.

Taking Time for Me: How Caregivers Can Effectively Deal with Stress

Author: Katherine L Karr

Family caregivers must often juggle their duties as parents, spouses, and employees while tending to the daily needs of a loved one who is elderly, chronically ill, or dying. As the rising cost of care forces many more people to respond to the needs of a family member, increasing numbers of primary care providers will become susceptible to anxiety, frustration, guilt, confusion, anger, emotional and physical fatigue, resentment, worry and depression, and other sources of pressure. Soon stress becomes an everyday occurrence that at times seems insurmountable. If those who care for the ill and the infirm are to remain effective, they must confront the reality of stress and their obligation, both to themselves and their loved ones, to take the time to find ways of relieving these pressures. In Taking Time for Me, Katherine L. Karr's insightful observations and suggestions - enhanced by compelling personal accounts of real care providers who are struggling with their own needs while tending to the needs of others - demonstrate that caregivers can overcome their personal conflicts and develop innovative ways of renewing their strength without jeopardizing the well-being of those who depend on them. From exercise regimens and support groups to recognizing the humor in everyday situations, this book can revitalize caregivers for the challenges ahead.

Deb Butterfield was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of ten, in the days before blood glucose monitors. In Showdown with Diabetes she writes about the world of diabetes from within that world, telling the story of her life with diabetes, through progressive debilitation, until she was finally freed of restrictions and needles with a pancreas transplant. If you have diabetes this book will help you to know your options. For the families of people with diabetes and the medical professionals who care for them, it also offers a rare and frank insight into the life of a diabetic person beyond the day-to-day physical management of the disease. Going further than the clinical language of blood tests, diets, and insulin regimens, it shows diabetes as a force that molds a person's personality and profoundly shapes his or her life. Most important, Showdown with Diabetes is the first book about this disease to embrace the era of cures, and to urge its readers to reach beyond short-term coping strategies to find long-term solutions.

Publishers Weekly

Calling for a fundamental shift in the way diabetes is viewed, Butterfield, founder and director of the Insulin-Free World Federation, combines the story of her own harrowing personal battle with a critical look at the limitations of standard approaches and a review of the latest advances. Diagnosed in 1970 when she was only 10, she began to experience secondary complications when she was in her early 20s, despite her best efforts at managing her diabetes. The progression was steady: retinopathy, then neuropathy, which led to major problems in walking, and then kidney disease. In 1993, with her condition worsening, she underwent a kidney-pancreas transplant in hopes that the new pancreas would produce insulin. Although the procedure has a high success rate, her body rejected the new organs. A year later, however, a retransplant was successful, and since then Butterfield has been living a virtually normal existence, taking only small daily doses of immunosuppressives. Her mission now, spelled out in part two, is to disseminate information about therapeutic options and about the research into transplanting insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells that may one day provide a cure for diabetes. With diabetes treatments accounting for one in four Medicare dollars, her message is one for policy makers as well as for diabetics. (Aug.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Butterfield was diagnosed with diabetes at age 10; at age 34 she received a successful pancreas/kidney transplant, and was cured of the disease. Five years later, Butterfield takes only small daily oral doses of immunosuppressive drugs to prevent organ rejection, and she is the director of the Insulin-Free World Foundation, devoted to finding cures for diabetes. Here she first chronicles her own struggle with the disease and then offers similarly affected readers a thorough, up-to-date guide to current research and future possibilities for their own cures. Butterfield makes crystal clear from the outset that the burden of having diabetes is "grossly underestimated" by medical professionals and the general public. Butterfield rejects out of hand the standard establishment line (see Touchette, below) that careful disease management leads to healthy living. Despite her adhering religiously to her treatment regimen, "within a four-year period diabetes killed the nerves below my knees, caused bleeding in the back of my eyes, the amputation of part of a toe, a skin graft"—and that was before the kidney failure and heart attack that finally led to her transplant operation. As Butterfield points out, the focus of diabetes research has been management; her mission is to refocus onto finding cures. This is a forceful, eloquent, engrossing, and ultimately convincing argument.

Disease of Virgins: Green Sickness, Chlorosis and the Problems of Puberty

Author: Helen King

When does a young girl's behaviour become a disease?
In sixteenth-century Europe, the disease of virgins, or green sickness, was seen as a common disorder affecting young unmarried girls. Its symptoms included weakness, dietary disturbance, lack of menstruation and most significantly, a change in skin colour. Understanding of the condition turned puberty and virginity into medical problems, and proposed to cure them by bloodletting, diet, exercise, and marriage.
Helen King examines the origins and history of the disease, from its roots in the classical tradition to its extraordinary survival into the 1920s, despite changes in how the mechanisms of puberty and menstruation were understood, and enormous shifts in medical theories and technologies. From menstrual disturbance to eating disorders, from liver disease to blood disorder, the disease of virgins has been adjusted throughout its history to fit medical fashions. However, little changed in the underlying ideas about the female body, and the need toregulate the sexuality of young women.
This compelling study poses a number of questions about the nature of disease itself and the relationship between illness, body image and what we should call 'normal' behavior.

The Internet for Radiologists

Author: Amit Mehta

The latest volume in the popular "Internet for" series, this title serves as a guidebook to the Internet, but specifically for the radiology practice. The Internet and related technologies have had significant impact on the field of radiology, enabling the acceptance, installation and proliferation of adjunct technologies such as Picture Archiving Communication Systems (PACS); Teleradiology; Voice Recognition (VR) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR). With radiologic-specific websites now numbering in the thousands, more and more practitioners need clear guidance on understanding and navigating the Internet, whether for research, images, case material, or commercial purposes. This book fills this need with authoritative coverage of the general application of the Internet in medicine, radiology websites, teleradiology, electronic medical records and patient care. A bonus CD-ROM provides direct links to over 500 websites mentioned throughout the text.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Edward J Escott, M.D. (University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description: This book is one in a series of subspecialty books about the Internet for physicians. It is a comprehensive primer covering all current aspects of computer related technologies that those in imaging will encounter today.
Purpose: The stated goal of this book is that it will "familiarize the reader with the technology behind the Internet and provide a basic understanding of what radiologists need to know to gain the most out of its potential offerings." As use of the Internet, PACS, the Web, and computers in general is integral to the radiologist today, a book introducing these technologies and their associated terminologies is a necessity, and a welcome addition to the radiology literature.
Audience: This book is written for anyone, regardless of their level of medical training, as it is a book about the Internet, networking, and related technology. It is meant for those working in radiology, and addresses issues specific to this field, such as PACS and Web teaching files, but the topics covered would be useful to anyone in any specialty wishing to gain an understanding of these subjects.
Features: This book serves as a very adequate primer and basic reference for all aspects of computer technology related to radiology. The book is divided into five parts, covering everything from the basics of the Internet, including information about firewalls, protocols, and networks, to the specifications to look for in a computer and the basic applications such as e-mail and Web browsers. Radiology specific topics, such as PACS, teleradiology, voice recognition, and Web teaching files are also discussed. Some of the topics covered, such as networks and Web design, have entire textbooks devoted to them, and their inclusion in this book serves mainly as an introduction. Likewise, the book provides an introduction to PACS, and explains the basic principles, components and terms, but would not give one all the knowledge needed to "implement a PACS" as stated on the back cover. A particularly valuable aspect of the book, and its largest section, is the extensive list of links (URLs) provided for various web resources such as education and universities, publications, and vendors. A nice component is the inclusion of a CD-ROM which contains all of these links, to allow easy navigation from the reader's computer. Because of the nature of the Web, some of the links are out of date, which is unavoidable. A nice touch would have been to include a Web site that would contain a constantly updated version of these links. Also included are an appendix with the ACR standards for Digital Image Data Management & Teleradiology and a glossary.
Assessment: This is a nice resource for those in the imaging field who would like to gain additional understanding of the basics of the computer related technologies used in radiology today. It is more of a primer than a comprehensive text on many of these topics, but it serves as a very adequate introduction.

The Rise of Viagra or Encyclopedia of Addictions and Addictive Behaviors

The Rise of Viagra: How the Little Blue Pill Changed Sex in America

Author: Meika Lo

"The book is not a polemic but a deep and thoughtful examination of derivative problems not anticipated by Viagra's aggressive marketers. It is especially effective when placing the campaign to promote Viagra (a trade name) in the greater context of the medicalization of modern health care."
Choice

"Meika Loe's core argument is that the unprecedented success of Viagra in America is not the result of an exciting scientific breakthrough bringing relief to the desperate or the dying. Rather, commercial interests have created a socially desirable but medically limited product-ironically, by denying the fundamentally social nature of sex. . . . The central argument gains pace throughout the book, becoming increasingly compelling as the ominous implications of Viagra for American society unfold."
The New England Journal of Medicine

"This book is immensely readable and highly accessible to a nonscientific audience. The Rise of Viagra adds a valuable sociological perspective to the public discourse on sexuality, technology, and sexual performance—a dialogue that the drug itself helped to create."
The Journal of the American Medical Association

"Loe delivers a smart, pointed analysis of the drug companies' phenomenally successful efforts to promote their goodies."
Washington Post Book World

"Loe documents the discoveries and the hype that is Viagra's legacy-from physician Giles Brindley dropping his pants to show hundreds of colleagues his chemically induced erection in 1983 to Bob Dole's confessions. In the process, Loe challenges drug companies' definitions of normal sex and normalaging."
Psychology Today

"The power of The Rise of Viagra lies in its clear observations of this fresh new process of disease creation. Many revealing and engaging quotes."
British Medical Journal

"This book tells the...very human story of the origins and consequences of the first blockbuster sex drug. . . . [A] sober inquiry about a drug that has intoxicated much of America. It could not be more thought-provoking, or more timely."
ForeWord

"Loe tells a fascinating and sometimes disturbing tale of products discovered before science understood why they worked, diseases expanded to the worried well and experts keeping cozy and often covert company with pharmaceutical companies."
Library Journal

"Armed with sociological skill and a sense of humor, Loe . . . raises important issues, which her heavily documented research suggests are real, regarding America's 'quick-fix pill culture.'"
Booklist, starred review

"This marvelous book offers penetrating insights about the most psychologically potent pill in history."
—Michael Kimmel, author of Manhood in America

" The Rise of Viagra provides a timely, highly original, ad compelling interrogation of the increasingly intimate (and troubled) relationship between sex and medicine in the Viagra era"
— Men and Masculinities

"[An] engaging account and trenchant critique of the powerful blue pill. Based on extensive research, and written with clarity, grace, and wit, The Rise of Viagra chronicles an incredible intertwining of bodies, pleasures, marketing savvy, and the undying quest for the medical fix."
—Steven Epstein, author of Impure Science: AIDS, Activism, and the Politics of Knowledge

"Meika Loe's book tells the story of Viagra with skill and verve. She brings to that tale a sharp eye, a fine ear, and just the right degree of irony."
—Daniel Callahan, author of What Price Better Health: Hazards of the Research Imperative

"A fine piece of contemporary history. The Rise of Viagra paints a thoughtful portrait, letting the reader decide whether the Viagra phenomenon is ultimately to be celebrated or rued."
—Katharine Greider, author of The Big Fix: How the Pharmaceutical Industry Rips Off American Consumers

"As companies like Pfizer change the very meaning of what it means to be human in the twenty-first century, we need scholars like Meika Loe to expose their actions. One of the most important books in the field."
—David Healy, author of Let Them Eat Prozac

Since its introduction in 1998, Viagra has launched a new kind of sexual revolution. Quickly becoming one of the most sought after drugs in history, the little blue pill created a sea change within the pharmaceutical industry—from how drugs could be marketed to the types of drugs put into development—as well as the culture at large. Impotency is no longer an embarrassing male secret; now it is called "erectile dysfunction," and is simply something to "ask your doctor" about. And over 16 million men have.

The Rise of Viagra is the first book to detail the history and the vast social implications of the Viagra phenomenon. Meika Loe argues that Viagra has changed what qualifies as normal sex in America. In the quick-fix, pill-for-everything culture that Viagra helped to create, erections can now be had by popping a pill, making sex on demand, regardless of age or infirmity, and, potentially, for the rest of one's life.

Drawing on interviews with men who take the drug, their wives, doctors and pharmacists as well as scientists and researchers in the field, this fascinating account provides an intimate history of the drug's effect on America. Loe also examines the quest for the female Viagra, the impact of the drug around the world, the introduction of new erection drugs, like Levitra and Cialis, and the rapid growth of the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry.

This wide-ranging book explains how this medical breakthrough and cultural phenomenon have forever changed the meaning of sex in America.

Library Journal

This book's punning title clues us in to its focus: discourse relating to Viagra and the medicalization of sexual dysfunctions, first men's and later women's. Drawing heavily on academic theories, Loe (sociology & women's studies, Colgate Univ.) tells a fascinating and sometimes disturbing tale of products discovered before science understood why they worked, diseases expanded to the worried well, and experts keeping cozy and often covert company with pharmaceutical companies. The story starts with the invention of the "little blue pill" and then covers "penis-as-machine" messages, cautions about the new drug, and the search for a female equivalent. This is not sociology Loe does not give statistics of messages, opinions, or behavior. It's more an agenda-driven anthropology of how medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, journalists, and lay people have spoken and written about Viagra and sexual dysfunction and what that might mean about us. Says Loe, real people and their needs have been given short shrift by this discourse. Recommended for business, medical, and sex collections in academic and large public libraries. Encyclopedia of Addictions and Addictive Behaviors

Author: Esther Gwinnell

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that there were nearly 1.7 million admissions to publicly funded substance abuse treatment programs in 2003. More than 20 percent of these admissions were for alcohol treatment, and of admissions related to illicit drug use, those involving marijuana and heroin were the most widespread. The facts make it clear that there is a major problem with substance abuse in the United States, but what is often overlooked is the crisis connected to less common addictions. Shopping, gambling, plastic surgery, weight loss, and food are all the object of addictions experienced by thousands of Americans.

The Encyclopedia of Addictions and Addictive Behaviors provides comprehensive coverage of addictive behaviors-their signs, symptoms, and causes-and discusses how to recognize and treat them. More than 300 entries provide an overview of common addictions and the treatments and therapies that can help sufferers cope with and recover from them.

With appendixes listing important organizations, state substance abuse offices, state controlled substances scheduling authorities, and state mental health agencies and illustrative tables of important statistics, in addition to a detailed bibliography, this is a comprehensive source on addictions and addictive behaviors.

Learning to Dance with the Dragonfly or Diet Step 20 Grams 20 Minutes for Women Only

Learning to Dance with the Dragonfly: Healing Lessons of Nature

Author: Holly N Fordyc

On a beautiful spring day Holly N. Fordyce received devastating news: A recent biopsy revealed she had breast cancer. Her physical healing began almost immediately with the usual medical treatment and alternative medicines, but fixing the spiritual damage to her soul and dealing with the ensuing anger, hurt, and fear was more complex.

Fordyce, a clinical social worker in private practice, discovered the only way to claim her life and stand in her own truth in the present was to journey past the darkness. Through writing, photography, and her passion for nature, Fordyce was able to come to terms with a life-threatening illness and begin the healing process. She writes about her self-exploration in a heart-felt new book, Learning to Dance With the Dragonfly: Healing Lessons of Nature. In this collection of journal entries, essays, and poems-highlighted with dazzling, color photographs-Fordyce shares her innermost thoughts, hopes, and fears.

"On this bright Tuesday afternoon when the light was so blue it hurt your eyes to look at it, I no longer felt comfortable in my own skin," she says of the day she discovered she had a life-threatening illness. "My body had betrayed me and now felt alien and threatening. The tenuous sense of control I'd once known dropped off like an old coat. This magical month when I live in my garden and dig in the earth, loving its moist raw fragrance, when I plant seeds filled with surprise for the months to come, when I'm surrounded by birdsong wild as a symphony, became a backdrop to terror."

The titles of the essays and poems themselves-such as "A Transformation Begins," "I Am," "Coming to Terms," and "When I Don't Feel So Much Like Me"-offer insight into the author's journey and inspiration for others trying to cope with life-threatening situations. She writes extensively about self-acceptance and the fragility of her connection to life. With honesty and openness, the author adds an eloquent voice to those who have conquered their own difficulties and become stronger for them.

Her poems, exuberant photographs, and gentle warmth invite the reader into that deeply centered place where each of us can experience passion, the power of healing, and the strength to move with the relentless unknowns of life.

Fordyce shares her writings and photographs in this 198 page hardcover book as a way to say to others you are not alone: "I hope my experience with the healing qualities of nature can be of help to others."

Learning to Dance with the Dragonfly is a highly passionate read as well as a cogent reminder of the lessons to be learned on the path to healing.

THE MIDDLESEX BEAT - Elizabeth Renomeron

When Holly N. Fordyce was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993, it was a rude jolt from a comfortable life. After treatment succeeded and she was declared cancer free, the fear that the tumor might come back took over her thoughts. Stifled by this constant worry and angered by the betrayal of her body, she felt lost over how to continue with daily life. As she remembers, "I was terrified, and I didn't know what to do with that." Her journey on the road to emotional recovery began on a particularly bad day a few years later when, while searching for some way to escape her nagging fears, she noticed a group of cardinals congregating by her window. It was a sight that provided her with the first stepping stone - the recognition of a bigger world that extended beyond the realm of cancer: nature. This recognition led to a flurry of journaling and creativity, as she explored her brush with mortality through journal entries, essays, poems, and photography.

Fordyce, who works as a clinical social worker in private practice, had previously only considered these creative outlets to be occasional hobbies. Now, she was driven by the need to express herself. Her creativity was fed by her connection with nature. On walks with her golden retriever Rosie along the cranberry bog near her home in Carlisle, Fordyce took new notice of such simple things as the flow of wind through flowers and the flight of herons across a frozen meadow. She came to realize that "We're connected with everything, with all the little creatures out there, and somehow that's comforting to know."

Fordyce chronicles her journey in her book, Learning to Dance with the Dragonfly: Healing Lessons of Nature (Dancing Dragonfly Press). The book is a compilation of journal entries that cover one year, as the reader follows the writer's thoughts through the seasons. Interspersed are essays and poems inspired by the nature scenes that she details in her journal. After noting the caress of a light breeze on an unusually warm March day, Fordyce ponders, in the essay "Thoughts on the Wind," the duality of the wind: how it can be destructive in the form of tornadoes, yet comforting. She explains, "When the first gentle wind of spring whispers confidences in my ear and riffles my hair like a lover, my heart skips and I fly with the bellsong of a bobolink on its invisible currents." This essay is followed by the poem "Wind in the Leaves," in which a child ponders the movement of trees.

Color photographs bring to life the moments Fordyce describes, from dragonflies precariously perched on flowers to the palpable shiver of a bird resting on a snow-covered tree. These varied components are combined to fully express her coming to terms with her condition. She says that, "It wasn't an epiphany, but over time, connect-ing with nature and getting involved with the photography, the writing, and dealing with my feelings, but also getting outside myself, had a transforming effect." Fordyce's connection with nature is best exemplified in her description of dragonflies. As she struggled to adapt to the new life that the diagnosis had forced upon her, she recognized that dragonflies possessed two qualities that were essential to her healing process: "Transformation. Dragonflies go through several stages of development that can take years. The other is the notion of adaptability . . . They've adapted to all different kinds of environments, and they still do," she explains. "So the ability to make change and to adapt to change was important to me." From nature, she learned about the struggle to survive, a challenge which all creatures face, and about the unflagging persistence of the spirit, whether it be of man or beast.

Although dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be an emotional rollercoaster that may be difficult to share with others, Fordyce feels that relating her experience may help those who are struggling with illness or with life in general. She says that although it's not a how-to book on survival, the lessons she learned from nature may help others to forget their nagging thoughts by living in the moment, whether by watching a humming-bird navigate a safe landing or by celebrating a friend's birthday. The book is the product of what her diagnosis led her to realize: life is short. We should listen to what Fordyce describes in one of her poems as the wisdom passed on to her while she was "Dancing With the Dragonfly": "The dragonfly said dance. She lit on my finger/ Breathe the earth's blue air and dance."

Midwest Book Review

Written by breast cancer survivor and professional social worker Holly Fordyce, Learning To Dance With The Dragonfly: Healing Lessons Of Nature is a contemplative and inspirational collection of essays, spiritual meditations, brilliant color photographs, and profound day-by-day insights into the wonder and beauty of the natural world. A moving and immersive reading experience, Learning To Dance With The Dragonfly is a original and unique reading experience that will linger in the mind long after the book is finished and placed back upon the shelf.

Library Journal

A clinical social worker, Fordyce was stung by her breast cancer diagnosis at age 53. Though her treatment went well, she remained bitter, angry, and fearful. And years of "readjustment" ("I'm a slow learner") still hadn't brought her peace or understanding of where life had taken her. Then her love of nature became a focus for "the search for my spirit." As in Heather Remoff's February Light, a seasonal journey through ovarian cancer, Fordyce's book features essays, poems, and a monthly journal, along with her beautiful four-color photographs of the landscape and creatures comprising her world. Among her observations of dragonfly and dune, bird and bog, she discusses her breast cancer as various anniversaries are noted. She is no Pollyanna: "I'm to think of breast cancer as a chronic, life-threatening illness, and this knowledge fuels black moods . Hope and fear coexist and are mixed with a teaspoon of denial, a pinch of panic and an insistent voice commanding me to make my days meaningful." Fordyce's observations are enticingly written, her vision intoxicating. Highly recommended for anyone who needs to regain a footing in life. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Cosmetic and Drug Microbiology or Poor Families in Americas Health Care Crisis

Cosmetic and Drug Microbiology, Vol. 31

Author: Donald S Orth

This reference reviews many principles and practices of microbiology in the cosmetic industry to address globalization of products. Supplying chapters from leading authorities around the world, this guide highlights emerging issues in nanotechnology, governmental regulation, and efficacy testing, as well as demonstrates the impact of microbiological testing in clinical studies.

Booknews

This reference covers the impact microbiology has on personal care products. Many of these products owe their existence to their effectiveness in treating a variety of conditions including acne, athlete's foot, body odor, halitosis, and others, all caused by the action of microorganisms. Another consideration is the potential negative effect of bacteria on cosmetic products resulting in spoilage and contamination. The volume discusses microbial growth in products and methods for controlling it; microbial growth in the manufacturing environment; principles of preservation; and injury and survival strategies of microorganisms. Preservative efficacy testing, compliance to good manufacturing practices, a review of government regulations affecting OTC drug products that relieve conditions caused by microorganisms, and the impact of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act are also discussed. Book about: Quick and Healthy or Meaningful Exchanges for People with Autism

Poor Families in America's Health Care Crisis

Author: Ronald J Angel

Poor Families in America's Health Care Crisis examines the implications of the fragmented and two-tiered health insurance system in the United States for the health care access of low-income families. For a large fraction of Americans their jobs do not provide health insurance or other benefits and although government programs are available for children, adults without private health care coverage have few options. Detailed ethnographic and survey data from selected low-income neighborhoods in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio document the lapses in medical coverage that poor families experience and reveal the extent of untreated medical conditions, delayed treatment, medical indebtedness, and irregular health care that women and children suffer as a result. Extensive poverty, the increasing proportion of minority households, and the growing dependence on insecure service sector work all influence access to health care for families at the economic margin.

The Checklist or Salud

The Checklist: What You and Your Family Need to Know to Prevent Disease and Live a Long and Healthy Life

Author: Manny Alvarez

In the tradition of YOU The Owner's Manual, The Checklist is organized as a guide to help individuals and families take the right precautions, at the right time in their lives, to avoid the most common health pitfalls and illnesses, and put them on the path to a vigorous and sound lifestyle.

Each decade in a person's life introduces new risks not seen in their previous ten years. A health plan must be tailor-made to fit a body as it matures decade to decade. Dr. Manny's friendly, easy explanations and simple maintenance breakdowns show people how to act preventively and proactively, without unnecessary fears or reliance on the abundance of outdated, counterproductive health myths. Dr. Manny's mission is to aid readers in their pursuit of living a healthy and long life, and to help close the door on future life-threatening illnesses using proven, sound medical knowledge.

Library Journal

Alvarez, the senior medical contributor for Fox News, presents a unique handbook of diseases and health risks within chronological "decades." Each chapter incorporates relevant, age-related precautions with an accompanying short checklist of recommended medical tests. Alvarez's somewhat chatty, engaging, and encouraging approach works in addressing most of the normal range of age-appropriate health concerns (e.g., prenatal development and migraines in the twenties; urinary diseases in the thirties). Violence, safety, environmental, workplace, and alternative medicine issues are given little or no coverage. Complex medical terms are often not defined in context; a glossary is not included. A somewhat helpful appendix briefly describes common medical tests that are mentioned at the end of chapters; an index would have been useful. The unannotated alphabetical resource list is virtually useless. Although intended as a preventive guide for the whole family, conditions are unevenly covered. While no similar handbooks are currently available, The Checklist is recommended with reservations only for medium to large public libraries as well as consumer health collections.-Janice Flahiff, Univ. of Toledo Health Science Campus Lib.

Publishers Weekly

First published in 1997, Salud remains one of the most comprehensive health manuals available for Hispanic women, satisfying the medical community's urgent need to address the concerns of Latinas in this country. Delgado is a familiar figure to millions nationwide as a frequent commentator in national media and as the president and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the country's largest network of Hispanic health providers. Practical, empowering, and engaging, this updated manual is designed to help Latinas become smarter consumers and benefit from health advantages that can enable them to live longer lives. Blending an accessible standard Spanish with true-life health stories that touch upon cultural myths and taboos, Delgado covers a wide range of topics in four sections. "Being a Latina" discusses the important role that the family and sense of community can play in Latinas' well-being and provides useful recommendations for choosing the best health plan, treatment, and doctor. The second section, "Being a Woman," analyzes female health issues such as fertility, sexuality, menopause, and pregnancy from a Hispanic perspective. In "Diseases," Delgado explains many of the ailments that affect the Latino community such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, alcoholism, sexually transmitted diseases, and diabetes. Finally, in "To Live Well" she highlights useful diets, exercise routines, and medicines and guides Latinas on how to take care of their seniors. Although the book could have had a clearer layout for those who just want to skim or skip sections, the illustrations, advice boxes, and chapter summaries do allow for a quick read. Delgado also provides a list of bibliographical resources and organizations that work on the issues covered, at the end of each chapter. Unfortunately, Delgado assumes that all her audience has access to health benefits when the sad reality is that many Hispanic immigrants lack the money or the proper legal documents to seek treatment. Nonetheless, there is little available literature on this subject that is as well suited to the needs of this audience. Since other available guides for Hispanic women tend to focus on childrearing and pregnancy, Salud is the most comprehensive guide by and for Latinas. Highly recommended for public libraries and bookstores serving Hispanic communities. Carmen Ospina, "Criticas" Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
